Situation
South Adams County Water & Sanitation was in search of a seasoned, well-respected leader to take over special district in the Denver Metro Area following the retirement of the long-tenured District Manager. This was a role that included a strong internal candidate, and the Board understood its responsibility to ensure an equitable, competitive process to ultimately arrive at the best fit for the role.
Action
We facilitated conversation with the Board of Directors to identify and highlight the district’s greatest priorities. When considering internal candidates, it is important to understand the risk of bias—good or bad—that can unintentionally influence a hiring decision. We highlighed specific and objective goals and desired attributes, which allowed us to seek out effective and competitive candidates for the Search Committee to consider.
Impact
After vetting several highly qualified candidates, the priorities identified early in the process led them to a candidate that not only had the desired experience, but pre-existing connections and relationships that accelerated their ramp-up time. Our objective process helped them compare the background and experience the internal candidate offered in comparison to other qualified candidates and ultimately resulted in their hiring.
